What Is A Stamping Tool?

Stamping is a metal cutting process that utilizes a press and dies to make parts from sheet metals or coils. Die design is crucial for part quality and the economies of production (please refer to the following on the types of dies). By using specially designed tooling, stamping can be adapted to specific processes of punching, blanking, bending, coining, embossing, deep drawing, and flanging.

 

 

Types of Stamping Die

Single Dies

A single die is used in specific processes such as bending, cutting, and drawing. This is the simplest form of stamping and it is completed in one machine cycle.

 

Compound Dies

Compound dies are used when multiple specific processes are applied to the same part in one setting. For instance, a punching process can be followed by a trimming process to achieve a better surface quality.

 

Progressive Dies

Progressive dies are improvised with multiple stamping tools. They work with an automatic feeding mechanism that drives a metal strip through multiple stations/stages of stamping. Parts are cut from the strip and each part is stamped with the tools in a predesigned sequence. The production rate is high and the spatial relationships between features that are imparted on the same part can be ensured.
